In preparing for a brief vacation, I began reflecting on my great variety of recent experiences. On April 12th, on the way to Hershey, Pennsylvania, I had a playdate with my five-year-old first cousin twice removed. I thought it would be fun to explore a bit of nature with him and perhaps craft impermanent land art sculpture. The weather was glorious! Sunny, warm, gorgeous blue skies as the backdrop for sitting, talking, drawing, exploring, and discovering. With baskets in hand, we gathered up pine cones, fallen branches, seed pods, and observed teeny-tiny bugs. We used our treasures and some shells to make simple land art. Our time together felt comfortable and relaxing.
In Hershey, I facilitated sessions for over 400 teenagers at the PA – FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) conference, which brought 6,700 students from across the state. The sessions are short, yet I always seek
“feedforward.” I crafted a chart with three simple symbols: a heart, three lightbulbs, and a wavy arrow artfully placed. The students shared what they liked, learned, and/or were taking with them to use in their lives. What a delight to read their answers!
In which aspects of your work do you feel energized and engaged, at least in part by the relationships that you have cultivated?
One of the many aspects I love about being at the conference is meeting up with my colleague, Marina. We’ve
known each other for over twenty years, having worked together for most of that time. She was the director of youth development for the American Management Association, and I frequently served as a speaker. Now we continue speaking at this conference on our own because we so enjoy the students, their energy, and desire to learn, and we adore the setting, and seeing each other.
In what areas of your life do you reconnect with people who played a significant part in your history?
On Friday, I met up with Iulian, one of my bikablo colleagues on the global team. We had coffee and talked about life outside of bikablo. Then his wife joined us, and we spent a delightful time at the Freda and Diego exhibit before wandering about, finding exhibits of interest. While I see Iulian online in meetings throughout the year–being in person, exchanging a hug, feeling the energy in our exchanges, being
joined with his wife for our excursion, and experiencing art together was awesome.
How do you find being with people in person versus on the screen? Might you make space in your weeks for what gives you energy?
On April 16th, I hosted the monthly Open Door Death Café—for attendees and regulars in the town next to where I live. Our conversations were wide-ranging— attendance at a recent funeral, reflecting on partner’s life choices, navigating family dynamics, the hurt and sadness about people remaining silent because they don’t know what to say to us in our grief, the ache of loss, the joy and memories, and more. I noticed that we sat in silence from time to time. To me, it was a measure of our desire to be with our own thoughts and feelings, and our comfort with each other – we didn’t need to fill every moment with talking.
When’s the last time that you were given opportunities to share your thoughts and feelings, open up your heart, and feel heard and understood?
In the past two weeks, I was in Mexico City for a few days of vacation with my daughter before hosting a bikablo Basic Day 1 training as a preconference event at the International Association of Facilitators Conference of the Americas, offering a Lightning Talk on visualization, and serving as a panelist speaking about my business for the Scaling, Sustainability, and Impact session. I was immersed in experiences of both play and work—learning and enjoying it all—great people, food, art, and history!
It’s been a wonderful few weeks, enhancing my feelings of connection with others and with myself, and creating memories.
How often do you immerse yourself in what you love about life?
